Language Barriers

This video clip is from the HBO comedy series Getting On. The video is an excellent (and comedic) example of how difficult communication may be in a hospital setting. Health care providers are required under the Title VI of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 to provide language access services for all patients. Title VI prohibits discrimination against race, color, or place or nation of origin (nwigloabl). Therefore, all hospitals are federally funded to ensure that language services are provided and accessible to all of their patients regardless of the situation.

There was a young man name Ahmed who was in my health class in the spring of 2016. He shared a story of when he first came to the United States from Pakistan he could not speak English. Ahmed had a severe case of the flu and was admitted to an urgent care center. He told us that he was scared and shy because the language barrier was largely gapped between him and his doctor. Ahmed refused to speak until the translator was present. Once she arrived his moods lifted tremendously.

Something to take from this story is to always work with your patient until they are comfortable enough to speak. Also, remember that poor communication can cause distress for some people. Be tolerant and above all be kind.

A Heckman Thought

"Mental health is just as important  as physical health. If you're distressed, try reading a book or getting some additional sleep. I find acupuncture, swimming, and eating dark chocolate with a glass of Cab Sav to be the best way to wind down."
